English followsDepuis quatre ans, ses recherches portent sur la superposition d’images et l’emboîtement de cadres visuels qui génèrent des compositions complexes où chaque image en appelle une autre. En multipliant les points de vue, les sujets et les références, l’artiste crée des œuvres qui interrogent les notions de surface, de profondeur et de perception.
S’inspirant aussi bien des dispositifs architecturaux, du trompe-l’œil que des interfaces numériques contemporaines, Lansdowne établit des ponts entre les structures picturales traditionnelles et les technologies actuelles de l’image. Son travail propose une réflexion sur la manière dont nous organisons et interprétons le flux incessant d’images qui nous entoure. Il s’intéresse particulièrement à la façon dont le sens émerge par association, dans un contexte où la circulation rapide des images tend à brouiller les frontières entre les catégories et les genres.
Né à Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique, Tristram Lansdowne vit et travaille à Toronto. Il détient une maîtrise en beaux-arts de la Rhode Island School of Design ainsi qu’un baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Ontario College of Art & Design. Son travail a été présenté dans plusieurs institutions et galeries au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. En 2024-2025, il a été artiste en résidence au Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, au Nouveau-Mexique. Ses œuvres figurent dans de nombreuses collections publiques et privées, notamment celles du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, de la Banque TD, de la Banque Royale du Canada, de la Banque de Montréal et de la Réserve fédérale de Chicago.

Over the past twenty years, Tristram Lansdowne has developed an artistic practice that explores the connections between the contemporary built environment and pictorial traditions drawn from art history. Recognized as one of the most important contemporary artists working in watercolor, he has presented his work in numerous exhibitions in Canada and internationally. This exhibition at MAC LAU is the most significant institutional presentation of his work to date.
For the past four years, his research has focused on the superimposition of images and the interlocking of visual frames, generating complex compositions in which each image evokes another. By multiplying perspectives, subjects, and references, the artist creates works that explore the notions of surface, depth, and perception.
Drawing inspiration from architectural elements, trompe-l’œil, and contemporary digital interfaces alike, Lansdowne bridges the gap between traditional pictorial structures and current imaging technologies. His work invites reflection on how we organize and interpret the ceaseless flow of images that surrounds us. He is particularly interested in how meaning emerges through association, in a context where the rapid circulation of images tends to blur the boundaries between categories and genres.
