Œuvre commémorative – Le Collège Manitou de La Macaza : un acte pour le futur
1. Contexte du projet
Le Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides - MAC LAU et le Comité Manitou/MAC LAU, avec le soutien du ministère de la Culture et des Communications et de son programme Soutien aux initiatives de commémoration, lancent un appel à dossier destiné aux artistes des Premières Nations, Inuits et Métis pour une commande d’œuvre dans le cadre d’un projet de commémoration autour du Collège Manitou de La Macaza (1973-76) qui fêterait sa 50e rentrée en septembre 2026.
Depuis 2023, le MAC LAU et le Comité composé d’ancien·ne·s du Collège Manitou unissent leurs efforts pour mettre en lumière l’héritage culturel, politique et éducatif du Collège Manitou à travers la démarche l’Effet Manitou. Parmi les activités de celle-ci, notons une collecte d’archives et de témoignages, des rencontres intergénérationnelles avec des anciens et anciennes de Manitou et des collaborations avec le Collège Kiuna, héritier spirituel et pédagogique de Manitou. Le projet dans lequel s’inscrit la commande est structuré en trois activités, soit 1) une rencontre entre d’ancien·ne·s du Collège Manitou, 2) une visite publique à La Macaza en présence d’ancien·ne·s du Collège Manitou, 3) la création d’une œuvre commémorative par un·e artiste autochtone professionnel·le.
2. Objectif de la commande d’œuvre
Nous souhaitons soutenir la création d’une œuvre commémorative originale qui témoigne de l’histoire, de l’esprit et de l’impact du Collège Manitou, institution phare de l’autodétermination autochtone au Québec. Les effets positifs qu’a eu cette institution sur les personnes qui l’ont fréquenté sont palpables et nous souhaitons en assurer le rayonnement à travers ce projet de commémoration. Ainsi, cette œuvre a le potentiel de servir :
- de trace vivante de l’héritage du Collège ;
- de support à la médiation et à la transmission de son histoire ;
- de pont entre générations, communautés et publics ;
- de référence artistique dans le cadre du programme de commémoration.
L’appel s’adresse à des artistes autochtones, de toutes disciplines ou médium, dont la démarche s’inscrit dans les objectifs du projet : mémoire, autodétermination, transmission, engagement politique et culturel.
3. Paramètres et admissibilité
Les personnes candidates doivent :
- être un·e artiste professionnel·le ;
- s’identifier comme Autochtone (Premières Nations, Inuits ou Métis) ;
- résider de manière permanente au Canada ;
- exercer leur pratique principalement sur le territoire canadien ;
- présenter une démarche artistique personnelle, singulière et reconnue par leurs pairs et/ou communautés autochtones ;
- démontrer une capacité à réaliser une œuvre intégrant des enjeux historiques, politiques et communautaires;
- être en mesure de livrer une œuvre finalisée pour la mi-août 2026.
4. Budget et soutien offert
- 3 000 $ remis à l’artiste comme honoraires pour la création de l’œuvre ;
- 1 200 $ budget de production ;
- per diem et hébergement (selon les besoins du projet).
Soutiens complémentaires
- dévoilement public de l’œuvre à La Macaza ;
- accompagnement par l’équipe du MAC LAU et le Comité Manitou/MAC LAU ;
- accès aux archives et témoignages liés au Collège Manitou rassemblés au MAC LAU ainsi qu’à des rencontres avec des personnes concernées par cette histoire ;
- possibilité d’acquisition de l’œuvre par le MAC LAU (selon les critères de la Politique de gestion des collections, section 8.3).
5. Critères de sélection
Les dossiers seront évalués selon :
- la qualité artistique et l’originalité de la démarche ;
- la pertinence du concept en lien avec les objectifs commémoratifs ;
- la faisabilité technique et la cohérence du projet ;
- le réalisme en regard du budget et de l’échéancier proposé ;
- l’expérience de l’artiste et la pertinence de son parcours;
- les retombées pour les communautés des Premières Nations, Inuits et Métis et pour l’art contemporain.
Le comité de sélection sera composé d’un·e membre du Comité Manitou/MAC LAU, d’un·e membre du Comité d’acquisition du MAC LAU et de deux employé·e·s du MAC LAU.
Une seule proposition sera retenue. Toutes les personnes candidates seront informées de la décision durant la semaine du 27 avril.
6. Documents requis
Les personnes intéressées doivent soumettre un dossier comprenant :
- un curriculum vitae récent (max. 3 pages) ;
- une biographie et une démarche artistique ;
- une description du projet proposé, incluant intentions, pistes conceptuelles et lien avec la commémoration et certains paramètres techniques envisagées ;
- 10 images ou courtes vidéos d’œuvres ou d’installation.
Dans un esprit d’hospitalité, nous demeurons flexibles sur les modalités de présentation des dossiers.

Politique d’acquisition – Œuvres de commande
L’acquisition éventuelle de l’œuvre se fera conformément à la Politique e gestion des collections du MAC LAU, section Commande d’œuvre (voir en document joint). Les principes clés sont l’évaluation par le Comité d’acquisition après production ; la possibilité de refus si l’œuvre ne correspond plus aux objectifs ou à la mission du Musée ; l’acquisition par don et/ou achat selon les modalités prévues.

Commemorative Work – Manitou Community College in La Macaza: An Act for the Future
1. Project Context
The Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides - MAC LAU and the Manitou/MAC LAU Committee, with the support of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and its Soutien aux initiatives de commémoration program, are launching a call for submissions from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis artists for a work commissioned as part of a commemorative project around Manitou Community College in La Macaza (1973-76), which would celebrate its 50th anniversary in September 2026.
Since 2023, MAC LAU and the committee composed of Manitou College formers students and employees have been working together to highlight the cultural, political, and educational legacy of Manitou Community College through the Effet Manitou initiative. Activities include collecting archives and testimonials, intergenerational meetings with Manitou elders, and collaborations with Kiuna College, Manitou's spiritual and educational heir. The project for which the commission is being awarded is structured around three activities: 1) a meeting between Manitou former students and employees, 2) a public visit to La Macaza in the presence of Manitou elders, and 3) the creation of a commemorative work by a professional Indigenous artist.
2. Purpose of the commission
We wish to support the creation of an original commemorative work that reflects the history, spirit, and impact of Manitou Community College, a leading institution for Indigenous self-determination in Quebec. The positive effects this institution has had on those who attended it are palpable, and we wish to ensure its continued influence through this commemorative project. This work has the potential to serve as:
- a living r-cord of the College's legacy;
- a medium for mediating and transmitting its history;
- a bridge between generations, communities, and audiences;
- an artistic reference within the framework of the commemoration program.
The call is open to Indigenous artists of all disciplines and media whose approach is in line with the project's objectives: memory, self-determination, transmission, and political and cultural engagement.
3. Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- be a professional artist;
- identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis);
- be permanent residents of Canada;
- practice their art primarily in Canada;
- present a personal, unique artistic approach that is recognized by their peers and/or Indigenous communities;
- demonstrate an ability to create a work that incorporates historical, political, and community issues;
- be able to deliver a completed work by mid-August 2026.
4. Budget and support offered
- $3,000 paid to the artist as a fee for the creation of the work;
- $1,200 production budget;
- per diem and accommodation (depending on the needs of the project).
Additional support
- public unveiling at La Macaza;
- support from the MAC LAU team and the Manitou/MAC LAU Committee;
- access to archives and testimonials related to the Manitou Community College collected at MAC LAU, as well as meetings with people involved in this history;
- possibility of acquisition of the work by MAC LAU (according to the criteria of the Collection Management Policy, section 8.3).
5. Selection criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on:
- the artistic quality and originality of the approach;
- the relevance of the concept in relation to the commemorative objectives;
- the technical feasibility and coherence of the project;
- the realism of the proposed budget and timeline;
- the artist's experience and the relevance of their background;
- the benefits for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities and for contemporary art.
The selection committee will be composed of one member of the Manitou/MAC LAU Committee, one member of the MAC LAU Acquisition Committee, and two MAC LAU employees.
Only one proposal will be selected. All applicants will be notified of the decision during the week of April 27.

Interested parties must submit a file including:
- a recent resume (max. 3 pages);
- a biography and artistic statement;
- a description of the proposed project, including intentions, conceptual approaches, and links to the commemoration, as well as certain technical parameters under consideration;
- 10 images or short videos of works or installations.
In the spirit of hospitality, we remain flexible regarding the format of submissions.

Acquisition policy – Commissioned works
The potential acquisition of the work will be carried out in accordance with the MAC LAU Collection Management Policy, section Commissioned Works (see attached document). The key principles are evaluation by the Acquisition Committee after production; the possibility of refusal if the work no longer corresponds to the Museum's objectives or mission; acquisition by donation and/or purchase according to the terms and conditions set out.
